The integrated graphics card at most allows playing older games or even some newer ones using minimum quality settings. For example, it is possible to play Anno 2070 from 2011 or Tomb Raider from 2013. Although we set all settings to a minimum, it was just enough for playing BioShock Infinite smoothly. It is, however, a bit disconcerting that a hot spot of °C is reached in the lower area in idle mode. It heats up to 43 °C during load. This maximum temperature development is favorably located on the underside of Dell's device and not in the user's work area. Lenovo's ThinkPad is an alarming sample with up to °C. The power supply of our business laptop does not get dangerously warm with °C in idle and °C during load. We push Dell's Latitude to its limits in a stress test scenario. The inner temperatures are recorded after one hour of FurMark and Prime95. The CPU's clock rate dropped to approximately GHz right at the beginning of the test, which is below its base clock of 2 GHz. Its average clock speed was GHz after one hour of testing. The CPU's temperature only temporarily climbed over 70 °C and was just below that on average. We reran 3DMark 11 after the stress test and hoped for the same scores as after a cold start. Users who like to listen to music when working should connect headphones or external Consumption The 65-watt power supply is never completely exhausted. It requires an average of just 29 watts even during load. A rate of 45 watts was only temporarily reached when the stress test programs Prime95 and Furmark were initiated. Thus, the power consumption is lower than that of the rivals. It does not look much different in idle mode. Our review sample is not particularly guzzling with - watts. All contenders consume only watts in standby, which is half of what Dell's laptop Runtime There are three battery options available in the Latitude E5250 lineup. In our case, Dell's laptop sports a 3-cell, 38 Wh battery. However, we could read out a slightly higher capacity of approximately 40 Wh. A 4-cell, 51 Wh battery is offered as an alternative. We use the Battery Eater tool for determining the maximum possible battery runtime. The screen's brightness is set to minimum, all communication modules are disabled, and Windows energy-saving profile is enabled for this. The Reader's test, which simulates reading texts, recorded a runtime of 10 hours and 46 minutes. We browse via Wi-Fi for testing a real-world scenario. The brightness was set to roughly 160 cd/m² and all communication modules were enabled. Dell's laptop shut down after 5 hours and 31 minutes. Lenovo's device lasts hours longer and can almost manage a whole workday without its power supply. Our review sample achieved a runtime of almost 2 hours when we set the brightness to maximum and ran Battery Eater's Classic test. Dell's Latitude is generally within a good range. Potential buyers should consider opting for the 51 Wh model to turn the Latitude into a real office machine. The casing not only compels with its elegant yet basic looks but also with its impeccable build. Unfortunately, the display does not feature a high-quality magnesium back despite the steep price of 1050 Euros ~$1242. Also, the maintenance cover should be reworked. The user will quickly fear that the small clips will break when removing it. We especially liked the input devices. They are not only suitable for mobile use but can completely replace external devices. The pressure point and typing feel are also decent. Dell capitalizes security. The device features NFC and a mechanical SmartCard reader, and many software options are available directly in the order process - though not for free. The biggest shortcoming of the E5250 is its screen. A TN screen with low brightness spoils the otherwise good laptop. Outdoor use is difficult despite the matte screen. A Full HD IPS screen is only available for a surcharge. Dell's Latitude can score again in system performance. Owing to the swift SSD and enough computing power, the sample is always prepared for every task. Even the emissions are largely good. The noise development during load remains pleasant and the device can be used without external power for quite some time for managing everyday work. However, it will not last a whole workday in view of our Wi-Fi test. All in all, Dell's Latitude E5250 scores very well. Many options that would turn the device into a business machine are only available for a surcharge, though. Buyers with the necessary wherewithal can configure a great laptop. Anyone with a clear price limit should take a look at the childhood on, the curiosity about the functioning of the latest technical achievements continued. As a matter of fact, I wouldn’t bet against it in a fight with its Latitude 14 and 15 siblings—our touchscreen model of the 12 was actually thicker and not a whole lot lighter. That’s not knocking the E5250; it’s extremely sturdy and a good performer. However, considering the minimal weight savings, you might consider the Latitude 14 and 15 5000 series with their larger displays and keyboards. Price and design The E5250 comes in a variety of configurations, from a $919 model with a Core i5 5200U, 4GB of system memory, and a 500GB, 7,200rpm drive, to the near high-end $1320, Core i5 5200U, 8MB, 128GB SSD configuration that I tested. You can pay even more if you want a larger 256GB SSD and the slightly faster i5-5300U CPU. Note that those prices are discounted “Dell” prices, which, to the best of my knowledge, are in effect at all times, despite a more expensive “list” price that’s always quoted. All E5250 models have displays. The less expensive models deliver 1366×768 resolution, and the pricier models such as ours, 1920×1080 with or without touch. Ours had lots of usable brightness, a wide viewing angle, and showed off 1080 movies and photos properly. But a lot of users will want to increase font size to avoid eyestrain. Dell refers to the Latitude 12 5000 series as thin and light. I’m not sure which standard the company is going by, but it’s not mine. The E5250 I toted around weighed pounds and measured a full inch thick. That’s heavy for a laptop that measures a little over 12 inches wide by about inches deep. Indeed, that’s only pounds less than the Latitude 14 14-inch E5450. Dell The Latitude 12 is neither thin nor light While the E5250 is obviously not over a foot high, our touchscreen test model was about 2 millimeters thicker than the Latitude 14 or 15 5000 series and the non-touchscreen Latitude 12 5000. Admittedly, the short horizontal dimensions make the E5250 seem thicker than it is, but it’s simply not thin or light. The up side to the E5250’s stockiness that is that there’s plenty of room for a large 51Wh battery. Said energy cell will power the laptop for about 4 hours and 2 minutes according to PC Mark’s work run-down test which is far more intensive than normal use. It ran for a couple of hours longer in my subjective test. The battery is internal, so you must remove the bottom cover to access it, but that’s a matter of a mere 6 screws. Once the panel is off you also have access to the mSATA SSD which resides on a removable daughterboard, the WWAN slot, the SIMM card slot, and a second free SODIMM slot. Pretty easy maintenance and upgrade there. The E5250’s ports are scattered around the edges, but the selection is a capable modern mix. There’s mini-DisplayPort, USB always-on, and SD card slot on the right; two USB ports, an HDMI port, and gigabit Ethernet on the back, and the audio jack and smart card reader on the left. Wi-Fi is AC and there’s Bluetooth on board. The power jack is on the back of the unit so you can keep the E5250 plugged in without the cord constantly getting in the way, as it does with most laptops. I like it. There are several docking options available for the E5250 the E-Port Plus for $ don’t ask us how they come up with these prices, plain E-Port for $ and the Dell Universal Dock and Monitor Stand for $ finally a normal price!. The warranty was a single-year, but this being one of Dell’s business-oriented laptops, there’s a wide variety of service and support plans available up to five years in length. PCWorld The Broadwell U CPU is basically dead even with the previous version’s Haswell U chip but easily outruns thinner and lighter notebooks. Performance Our test E5250’s performance was quite good. It turned in a PC Mark 8 Work Conventional score of 2,742 and a Creative Conventional score of 2,203. Those are slightly lower than the 2,841 and 2,242 achieved by the older Core i5 4310-based model we were originally sent but it’s basically a tie. No doubt the slightly pricier Core i5 5300U configurations would add more performance. For reference, we’ve also included PC Mark 8 Work Conventional scores from a pair of ultrabooks and there is a considerable performance difference that’s attributable to tighter thermal controls of the ultrabooks. Gaming frame rates, as with all Intel integrated graphics, are suited only for older generation or Web games. Not that you can’t have a lot of fun with those. The Samsung PM851 SSD was a bit of a mixed story CrystalDiskMark rated 4GB file transfers at 462MBps reading, but only 136MBps writing. That means you get the quick feel of an SSD, except when you’re saving large files. Subjectively, I found navigating the Windows operating system and running apps a facile experience. Not surprising given the SSD. Movies looked great, and the unit’s speakers actually sounded decent. I wouldn’t exactly call what’s emanating from them bass, but it’s closer to it than a lot of laptops manage. The keyboard types nicely and the touchpad was responsive with firm buttons. Dell It may be thick but performance was good and it has a solid feel to it. Conclusion The Latitude 12 E5250 is a capable laptop with state-of-the-art connectivity and good performance. Personally, I’d opt for a Latitude 14 or 15 with a larger display and keyboard at roughly the same weight. But tastes vary, and if you or your business like the Latitude 12 5000 series form factor, and can afford one, by all means. Note You can get into a Latitude 12 for less money with the 3000 series and pay more for the security-minded TPM, biometrics 7000 series.
